Scribbler Factfile: Marisha Porter

My name is Marisha Porter and I was born and brought up in the east end of London.

I attended a Roman Catholic Grammar school for girls, which tried to turn us into young ladies. Whilst there I was told in my school reports, that I was too much of a dreamer and I needed to concentrate more. But sitting at the back of the class staring out of the window allowed my imagination to develop, although it didn’t help with my schoolwork.

I learned to read at an early age and my favourite place to visit was our local library in Hackney. When I was old enough to get there myself, I spent hours absorbing and feeling the wonder of having all those books to hand.

The love of writing came later, much later in fact, I got married and had my children at a fairly young age and when a friend of mine asked if I had any hobbies other than looking after children I had to stop and think. Apart from my part time job in an office accounts department, I hadn’t read a book or scribbled any stories or poems which I had loved doing before my life became so hectic.

That’s when I began my covert scribbling again and I began to make a little time to read some books. I also attended evening classes for O. level and A. level English, which were a challenge achieving reasonable results. But my preference was to write my own stories.

The next step was the creative writing courses I joined and last but not least was a regular writing group.

Obviously having a busy life does create gaps in my writing years, but after winning a couple of local short story competitions, and being a part of some group writing ventures, my hobby is more of a vocation now.

I am no longer a closet writer and am at present slowly writing my first novel. Some of my friends and family now know I write and maybe one day I will have the courage to fill in a form and enter, WRITER as my occupation, but in the meantime I hope you will enjoy some of my work entered on our website.

For all those dreamers out there, get writing its good for your sanity!
